Sonia Rees was born in Kent, moved to Wales until she was seven, when she returned to Kent with her family. Her father John was a secondary school teacher and enjoyed performing in the local West Wickham Operatic Society with her sister Anita. Sonia soon followed suit. After applying to become a teacher, Sonia changed her mind and decided to follow the path of a professional actress and singer.
She was put under contract by Jack Hylton and went straight into pantomime at Golders Green Hippodrome in a production of Humpty Dumpty with Arthur Askey. She toured with the Fol de Rols Winter and Summer seasons in Scotland and the south coast of England. Sonia travelled back to Wales to appear in TV series “Land of Song” with Ivor Emmanuel. She then went on to perform on Oh My Papa at the Garrick Theatre with Peter O’Toole, Rachel Roberts and Roy Skelton.
Sonia appeared in two shows with Crazy Gang including a Royal Command Performance in 1961, the first to be televised . She opened the show with “Clown Jewels”.
